Tyler Chang
Applied AI Ethicist & PhD Student
Introduction
I examine the ethics of human-AI romance and its impact on the normalization of sexual violence.
I am an existentialism-inspired applied artificial intelligence ethicist pursuing a PhD in Information Science at Drexel University. My work on human-AI discourse, social media transparency, generative AI risks for youth, companion AI policies, and harassment on TikTok has been published or accepted at ACM CHI, ACM CUI, ACM CSCW, and ACM GROUP.
Outside of research, I can usually be found reading Scandinavian horror novels, meandering through whichever city happens to be nearest, fighting off feelings of Waldeinsamkeit, or writing philosophy books for fun—one of which may eventually see the light of day.
Current Focus
Ethics at the boundary of intimacy and artificial intelligence.
My research focuses on the ethics of intimate romantic and sexual relationships between humans and AI systems, with an emphasis on moral status and the design of effective interventions for sexually violent myth reinforcement. I also study how generative AI affects moral consensus and popularity, and how ethical principles might be quantified for precise use in digital safety contexts.
